Fourteen-year-old Johannesburg learner Phoenix Howie has been selected to represent Gauteng in three different age groups at the 2026 Ice Hockey Inter-Provincial Tournaments. The Reddam House Helderfontein learner has earned places in the Gauteng U16, U18 and U20 first teams. Despite balancing school with training and competition, Phoenix has continued to excel, competing against older, more experienced players and establishing himself as one of the province's rising ice hockey stars.

Africa’s First Liver Perfusion Machine Boosts Transplant Care

A major milestone in African healthcare has been reached with the arrival of the first liver perfusion machine at the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Parktown. The advanced R2.7 million technology keeps donor livers functioning outside the body.This could improve the quality of donor organs and increase the number of successful liver transplants. Transplant surgeon Dr Sharan Rambarran said the machine may also reduce complications linked to traditional ice storage, helping patients recover more quickly after surgery.

Daredevil Run Returns to Raise Men's Cancer Awareness

Registration has opened for the 2026 Hollard Daredevil Run, with participants once again being encouraged to don their signature purple Speedos and help raise awareness of men's cancer. Now in its 17th year, the popular charity event will take place on 23 October, bringing together thousands of South Africans in support of a vital cause. The 2026 campaign was officially launched at the Hollard Campus in Parktown. 1.2 million rand was raised through last year’s event which was presented to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) and the Prostate Cancer Foundation. The funds will support prostate cancer awareness campaigns and help improve early detection for men across the country.

Rooted in the Buddhist practice of dana, which encourages selfless giving, dansal offer free meals, drinks and other essentials to anyone passing by, with nothing expected in return. This year the event has taken on even greater significance as many families continue to face rising living costs and extreme heat.
