Long-awaited fencing project begins along R24 and Minuach Road

New barrier fencing is going up along Minuach Road between the R24 and Edenvale, marking a long-awaited safety upgrade for the area.
Rand Water has started installing the fencing following earlier pipeline work, with councillors confirming construction began in early January.
The project will stretch from the Barbara Road Bridge to the Edenvale Road Bridge and is expected to prevent pedestrians crossing the highway, reduce illegal taxi stops and improve safety for nearby communities including Buurendal, Highway Gardens and Hurlyvale

South Africa launches first HIV vaccine human trial in Cape Town

South Africa has taken a major step in the fight against HIV, with the first-in-human clinical trial of a potential vaccine now underway in Cape Town.
The study has launched at the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation at Groote Schuur Hospital, where 20 HIV-negative volunteers have already been enrolled to test the vaccine’s safety and immune response.
Wits University researcher Professor Glenda Gray says the goal is to move closer to a functional cure that could reduce long-term treatment needs.

Sport, culture and youth development took centre stage in Johannesburg over the weekend as Township Rugby Youth hosted its TRY Festival at Bill Jardine Stadium in Industria.
The event brought together 12 township rugby clubs, with both men’s and women’s teams competing in knockout matches, giving players aged 18 to 32 a chance to showcase their talent in front of scouts and administrators.
Founded in 2023, the Township Rugby Youth programme aims to break barriers to access in the sport and create pathways into schools, universities and professional rugby. The day also featured live entertainment, family activities and a public match screening, turning the tournament into a full community celebration.
