Story 1
Sport, culture and youth development took centre stage in Johannesburg over the weekend as Township Rugby Youth hosted its TRY Festival at Bill Jardine Stadium in Industria.
The event brought together 12 township rugby clubs, with both men’s and women’s teams competing in knockout matches, giving players aged 18 to 32 a chance to showcase their talent in front of scouts and administrators.
Founded in 2023, the Township Rugby Youth programme aims to break barriers to access in the sport and create pathways into schools, universities and professional rugby. The day also featured live entertainment, family activities and a public match screening, turning the tournament into a full community celebration.

Dozens of underprivileged children in Durban are hitting the waves with confidence after receiving donated surfboards and gear from the local community.
Surf HQ Surf Shop has been collecting pre-loved and unused boards, wetsuits and equipment, and passing them on to the non-profit Surfers Not Street Children, which supports vulnerable youth through surfing, mentorship and life skills programmes.
The organisation has worked with street-connected children for nearly 30 years, helping many go on to find jobs and even represent South Africa in international competitions.
The latest donations mean more young surfers now have the tools they need to stay off the streets and build brighter futures.
