Scotland makes swift bricks mandatory in new homes
Teaser / Tailpiece story
All new homes in Scotland will now be required to include swift bricks, designed to give cavity-nesting swifts a safe place to breed.
Cavity-nesting swifts are birds that lay their eggs in small holes or spaces in walls, roof cavities, or trees. Modern buildings often remove these natural spaces, contributing to a sharp decline in swift populations.
The law, passed after a four-year public consultation, was championed by Green MSP Mark Ruskell, who called it a “cheap, simple and common sense solution” that helps communities become more welcoming for wildlife.
Ruskell also encouraged England to consider similar legislation.
