Boom Shaka Honoured with Freedom Legacy Award
Story 2
Legendary kwaito group Boom Shaka has been honoured with the Freedom Legacy Award at this year’s Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival at Constitution Hill.
Formed in 1993, the group of Thembi Seete, Lebo Mathosa, Theo Nhlengethwa and Junior Sokhela gave South African youth a bold, unapologetic voice during the dawn of democracy.
Their debut hit It’s About Time became both a party anthem and a declaration of freedom, influencing music, fashion and language for generations.
Over 30 years later, Boom Shaka’s legacy still resonates, with their impact seen in today’s music and cultural expression.
Festival organisers say the award celebrates their role in shaping identity and freedom of expression in post-apartheid South Africa.
