Fourways Gardens expanded its annual pink trees campaign this October by hosting a breast cancer awareness session for domestic workers, nannies, and caregivers.
About 30 women attended the interactive talk led by Reach for Recovery Johannesburg facilitators, learning about breast self-checks, screening, treatment options, and hearing inspiring survival stories.
Francois Grobler, the estate’s communications manager, said the initiative aimed to empower those who often have limited access to health information.
The event was supported by sponsors and residents, with refreshments, goodie bags, and posters donated, and concluded with a R2 000 donation to Reach for Recovery.

In Brazil’s Cerrado, a volunteer firefighting brigade led mostly by Bakairi Indigenous women has prevented major fires in the Santana Indigenous Territory for four years.
The brigade was formed after 2018 fires exposed the community’s vulnerability and gaps in government support.
Trained in wildfire management, first aid, and forest restoration, the 45-strong team protects 73,000 hectares while preserving traditional knowledge and ensuring local food security.
Operating without pay and with limited resources, the women have kept the territory safe, setting an example for other Indigenous communities in the region.
