G20 Summit sparks tourism surge in Johannesburg

The Department of Tourism says the impact of the G20 Summit on South Africa’s tourism industry is beginning to unfold.

Johannesburg hosted more than 4,000 high-level delegates, propelling the city into the global spotlight, driving a sharp increase in tourist activity.

South Africa welcomed 7.6 million international arrivals from January to September 2025, marking a 1.1 million increase over the same period in 2024.

The G20 itself is estimated to have injected roughly R1.2-billion in direct tourism revenue, icreasing demand for luxury lodgings, guided safaris and cultural immersions across Gauteng and beyond.

The Gauteng provincial government anticipates a R3-billion economic infusion from November to mid-December, with spending on transport, dining and retail.

Table Mountain National Park set for busy festive season

The South African National Parks says it is fully prepared to welcome increased visitor numbers to the Table Mountain National Park this festive season.

The South African National Parks recorded over 1.7 million entries across its access points, an almost 20% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

San Parks also highlighted strong safety measures and enhanced firefighting and environmental protection capacity.

SANParks spokesperson, JP Louw, says with more flight and cruise ship arrivals expected, this upward trend is set to continue into December and January.

Platreef Platinum Mine officially opened

President Cyril Ramaphosa has opened the Ivanhoe Mines’ massive Platreef project in Limpopo – a brand-new platinum mine that took over 25 years to reach production.

The first Phase of the project will soon deliver 100,000 ounces a year of platinum, palladium, rhodium and gold, before jumping to 450,000 ounces in 2028.

The mine is expected to create over 5,000 permanent jobs once at full capacity.
