NASA Awards BioSCape Science Team

NASA has awarded a Group Achievement Award to the BioSCape project team, which includes international researchers and South African scientists.
The project brought together more than 150 scientists from 40 institutions to map biodiversity in South Africa’s Greater Cape Floristic Region.
Researchers used airborne and field missions to collect data on plant and animal species and study ecosystems across the region.
The collaboration combined work by NASA teams, local ecologists, and conservation organisations to complete the biodiversity survey.

Government Launches Phanda Thursday Secunda

The National Youth Development Agency, Mpumalanga Provincial Government, and Govan Mbeki Municipality have launched Phanda Thursday in eMbalenhle, Secunda, on 28 May 2026.
The programme brings youth services directly to communities, allowing people aged 18 to 35 to register for training, funding, mentorship, and employment support without travelling to major cities.
Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and People with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, says at the launch, young people signed up for NYDA programmes including business training and skills development:

Cape Town Opens Safe Sleeping Zone

The Cape Town Central City Improvement District and The Haven Night Shelter will open a Safe Sleeping Zone in District Six on 2 June 2026 to provide overnight shelter for chronically homeless people in the CBD during winter.
The site will operate until September 2026 and will offer up to 60 beds each night.
Individuals will be referred through a controlled system and will receive beds, blankets, hot drinks, and meal tokens, with security and staff on duty overnight.
The initiative aims to ease pressure on existing shelters as demand for beds in Cape Town exceeds available capacity during winter.
