UJ Choir to open major global choral symposium in China

The University of Johannesburg Choir has been selected to open the World Symposium on Choral Music 2026 in China, one of the most prestigious events in the global choral calendar.
The Johannesburg-based choir is one of only 13 ensembles invited worldwide and the only African group on the programme, earning the honour of performing first at the symposium in August.
Made up of students from across different academic fields, the choir is known for its award-winning performances and international recognition, including gold medals at the World Choir Games.

South African scientists honoured in NASA group achievement award

South African researchers and conservation teams have been recognised in a NASA Group Achievement Award for their role in the BioSCape project, a major international study mapping biodiversity in the Cape Floristic Region.
The project brought together more than 150 scientists from 40 institutions worldwide, combining airborne NASA technology with ground-based field research to better understand ecosystems and climate impacts. Local teams from universities and conservation agencies played a key role in collecting and analysing data.
The collaboration is expected to support future conservation planning and improve how ecosystems are managed in the face of climate change.

First-time Comrades runner takes on race for Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust

KwaZulu-Natal runner Nicky Chovuchovu will line up for his first Comrades Marathon this year, running in support of the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust.
Chovuchovu says volunteering at the organisation inspired him to take on the 90-kilometre challenge after seeing the impact of its work in HIV prevention, healthcare and community support in the Valley of a Thousand Hills.
The Comrades Marathon is often described as the ultimate human race, and his effort will raise awareness and funds for families supported by the trust.

The African Development Bank Group’s annual meetings are underway in Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo, with more than 3,000 delegates discussing ways to strengthen Africa’s economy through improved integration and infrastructure development.
Discussions are centred on transport networks, trade corridors, energy and financing projects aimed at improving the movement of goods and people across the continent.
The gathering brings together government leaders, financial institutions and development partners from across Africa and beyond.
AfDB Infrastructure and Development Director Mike Salawu says the bank remains focused on strengthening integration and infrastructure growth across Africa
