Reserve Bank cuts repo rate by 25 basis points
Story 1
The South African Reserve Bank has cut the repo rate by 25 basis points, bringing it down to 7.25%.
This marks the first rate cut since the monetary policy committee paused its easing cycle earlier this year. The decision followed the committee’s meeting, which wrapped up on Thursday.
Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago says five of the six MPC members voted in favour of the cut, while one member called for an even bigger reduction.
Kganyago says inflation remained well contained in April, coming in below 3%, largely due to lower fuel prices. Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, also eased to 3% — the bottom of the bank’s target range.
The new rate will take effect from the 30th of May.

Durban Youth Turns Plastic Waste into Purposeful Creations
Story 2
In Durban, a young man is turning plastic waste into purpose.
Minenhle Simelane, originally from rural eShowe, is making waves with his colourful, handwoven mats – crafted entirely from discarded plastic and waste materials.
After matriculating in 2018 from Embizweni High School and struggling with unemployment, Minenhle turned to creativity and conservation. Inspired by his grandmother and using an Imbongolo, or mat-making machine, he began collecting plastic from roadsides, rivers and dumpsites – giving it new life in the form of vibrant, functional art.
His work not only provides an income but also tackles plastic pollution one mat at a time.

Food Garden Initiative Supports Krugersdorp’s Most Vulnerable
Story 3
The Cradle of Hope’s Harvest Initiative is making a meaningful difference in Krugersdorp by supporting local farmers and promoting sustainable food systems.
The project recently delivered its first crop of fresh spinach to residents of the Jack Cotton Old Age Home, many of whom rely on monthly food parcels from the organisation.
Founder Melodie van Brakel says the initiative also plans to introduce educational programmes that teach the community, including the elderly, how to grow their own food. By transforming previously unused land into productive gardens, the project aims to boost local food security and benefit the ecosystem.
Residents like Petrus de Villers have expressed deep gratitude for the fresh produce and support.
