Food Garden Initiative Supports Krugersdorp’s Most Vulnerable
Story 1
The Cradle of Hope’s Harvest Initiative is making a meaningful difference in Krugersdorp by supporting local farmers and promoting sustainable food systems.
The project recently delivered its first crop of fresh spinach to residents of the Jack Cotton Old Age Home, many of whom rely on monthly food parcels from the organisation.
Founder Melodie van Brakel says the initiative also plans to introduce educational programmes that teach the community, including the elderly, how to grow their own food. By transforming previously unused land into productive gardens, the project aims to boost local food security and benefit the ecosystem.
Residents like Petrus de Villers have expressed deep gratitude for the fresh produce and support.

Tech Meets Tradition – Eastern Cape Healer Builds AI App for Medicinal Plants
Story 2
Blending modern tech with ancient wisdom, Eastern Cape IT specialist and traditional healer Onke Simandla has developed an app that uses artificial intelligence to identify medicinal plants.
Simandla, who just earned his master’s in IT from the University of Fort Hare, says the project aims to support herbalists while bridging the gap between traditional and Western medicine.
While studying, he also completed a course in plant medicine, worked full-time, and even performed at the Makhanda Arts Festival.
Backed by the CSIR, Simandla travelled to China to study its dual healthcare system, inspiring his vision of an inclusive public health model for South Africa.
He hopes to empower rural communities through sustainable production of traditional medicine – and believes tech can be a healing force in more ways than one.
