SA Becomes Africa’s Top Petrol Importer
Story 2
South Africa has overtaken Nigeria to become Africa’s largest petrol importer, demonstrating a major change in the continent’s energy trade.
A new report by energy consultancy CITAC shows that South Africa imported 4.2 million tonnes of petrol in the first quarter of 2025, while Nigeria imported only 3.1 million tonnes.
Nigeria’s sharp drop is due to improvements in local refining.
The launch of the massive Dangote Refinery, which began operating in September 2024 now meets around 60% of the country’s fuel needs.
The refinery is expected to help Nigeria save up to $10 billion in foreign exchange by reducing petrol imports.
