Volunteers keep Alexandra street clean through daily efforts
Two volunteers in Alexandra have spent the past three years cleaning and clearing waste along Second Avenue between Alfred Nzo and Josias Madzunya, creating a cleaner and safer space for residents.
Ntombizodwa Sithole and Bizwephi Buthelezi say they sweep the area daily, removing litter and hazards such as broken glass to improve conditions for children and the wider community.
Their ongoing efforts have helped reduce waste buildup and encourage greater pride in the local environment.
The volunteers continue their work without payment, driven by a strong commitment to their neighbourhood.

Content creator to climb Kilimanjaro for medical charity
Twenty three year old content creator Leonie Buchegger is partnering with the organisation Médecins Sans Frontières in an attempt to summit Mount Kilimanjaro between the 1st and 10th of July 2026.
The expedition aims to raise more than 180 thousand rand for the organisation’s global medical humanitarian work.
During the climb, Buchegger will share updates with her audience, documenting the physical and mental challenges of reaching Africa’s highest peak while drawing attention to the healthcare needs that inspired the campaign.

Bottle top drive turns waste into wheelchairs for those in need
Learners at Rynfield Primary School in Benoni have helped provide mobility for people in need by collecting nearly five tonnes of plastic bottle caps and lids.
The initiative saw the school partner with recycling organisations to exchange the collected caps for wheelchairs, resulting in a total of 10 wheelchairs being donated to local care organisations and support centres.
School officials say the project encourages environmental responsibility while also supporting vulnerable community members who rely on mobility assistance.

Baby hippo helps shine global spotlight on wildlife conservation
A baby hippo known as Bumpy has captured global attention after being rescued by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya and raised by conservation teams.
The orphaned hippo, cared for after losing his mother, became an internet sensation as videos of his recovery and playful behaviour were widely shared across social media platforms around the world.
The Trust says the attention has helped introduce millions of new followers to its wildlife rescue and rehabilitation work, which includes caring for orphaned elephants, giraffes and other vulnerable animals.
Bumpy’s story has since helped raise awareness about wildlife conservation efforts across Africa and the importance of protecting orphaned animals.
