South African artist Simnikiwe Buhlungu has won the 2026 MTN x UJ New Contemporaries Award at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda.
The Johannesburg-born artist received a R100,000 prize in recognition of her installation exploring identity, memory and shared histories through sound and visual art.
Buhlungu's work was selected by an independent panel from four finalists exhibiting at the festival.
The award recognises emerging South African artists whose work contributes to contemporary art.
