Taiwan communities protect migrating crabs with simple solutions
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Communities near Taiwan’s Taijiang National Park are helping protect thousands of migrating crabs by creating safer routes for them to reach the coast.
Local volunteers and park workers have built small bamboo bridges to help the mangrove land crabs cross waterways, while roads are temporarily closed when the crabs move through the area.
The efforts helped support a growing migration, with around 10,000 crabs recorded making the journey last year.
Conservation officials say protecting the crabs also helps maintain the health of coastal forests and ecosystems.
