Township Rugby Youth to host TRY Festival in Johannesburg

Township Rugby Youth will host the TRY Festival this Saturday at Bill Jardine Stadium in Industria, Johannesburg, bringing together sport, culture, and youth development.
The festival will feature 12 township rugby clubs, with male and female teams and players aged 18 to 32 competing in knockout matches.
Founded in 2023, the Township Rugby Youth programme was created to build pathways from township communities into education and professional sporting opportunities.
Organisers say the festival gives township players a platform to showcase their talent in front of scouts and sports administrators.
The event runs from 8am to 5:30pm.

Garden Route project wins AI sustainability award at World Economic Forum

A South African-born project tackling one of AI’s biggest blind spots, nature, has won the Startup Innovation Award for Top AI Sustainability Project at Davos Innovation Week during the World Economic Forum.
Project ZOA, founded in the Garden Route by Douglas Eriksen, collects real wildlife and ecosystem information and turns it into data that AI can use. This helps technology take nature into account when making decisions.
The initiative is a partnership between Zindalo, Wits Enterprise, and Cango Wildlife, which provides the infrastructure for Project ZOA’s data collection and verification.
The project was shown to global policymakers and technology investors and aims to protect ecosystems, guide smarter development, and showcase South African conservation to the world.

South African Rescue Teams Aid Flood Victims in Mozambique

Specialists from the University of Johannesburg’s Advanced Rescue Simulation Centre joined Rescue South Africa in Mozambique to help people trapped by devastating floods.
Working under South African coordination with Rescue SA and the National Disaster Management Centre, the team carried out swift water and aviation rescue operations in extremely challenging conditions.
South African Air Force crews evacuated 450 civilians from flood stricken areas and transported them to safety.
UJ hosted the specialists before deployment and praised their contribution to saving lives and assisting displaced families.
Connor Hartnady, team lead, says it took careful coordination and teamwork to carry out the rescue.
