Eastern Cape grandmother regains sight after four years
Story 2
An Eastern Cape grandmother has regained her sight after living in darkness for four years following free cataract surgery performed by the medical team from Grace Vision during an outreach near Mthatha.
Grace Vision is a South African non-profit organisation that provides free primary eye care and cataract surgery to people in rural communities who cannot afford treatment.
Nowisile Nokhulela lost her eyesight in 2022. During those years, her husband became her full-time caregiver, guiding her through daily tasks and taking over the work they once shared.
After the surgery, Nowisile said she was grateful to see again, while her husband said it felt like he had “got his partner back,” as they look forward to sharing life side by side.

Neuralink Develops Implant Aimed at Restoring Vision
Teaser / Tailpiece story

Neuralink is developing a new brain implant called Blindsight, designed to help people who are blind or who have lost their sight see again.
The experimental device would send visual signals directly to the brain’s vision centre, bypassing the eyes and optic nerves.
An external camera would capture images and wirelessly transmit them to a small implant, which then stimulates the brain to create visual perception.
The company says the technology could potentially help both people born blind and those who lost their sight later in life, if the visual cortex is intact. The project was announced by Neuralink founder Elon Musk.
