Linden Resident Spruces Up Street

While many were relaxing over the festive season, Linden resident Nicky Liebenberg was busy giving her neighbourhood a makeover. A Linden local for 17 years, Liebenberg cleaned a neglected stretch of 3rd Avenue between 6th and 7th streets. Liebenberg says It’s people who make a community, noting that residents often have to step in where municipalities fall short. She adds that strong communities also help lower crime, as people watch out for each other.

Rand Ends Year on a High

The rand continued to strengthen since last week, getting a lift from gold prices that keep hitting new highs. According to reports rising precious metal prices have helped push the local currency to its best level in over three years. The rand is now on track to end the year more than 12% stronger against the dollar, backed by improved fiskle discipline and lower inflation. Shares on the JSE also edged higher, with the Top 40 index up 0.6%, extending gains from the previous session.

Dusi 75th Edition Set for 2026

The Dusi Canoe Marathon will celebrate its 75th edition in 2026. The famous river race takes place from February 19 to 21. Fifteen-time champion Andy Birkett has confirmed he will return for the milestone event. He will once again race with his 2024 winning partner, Matt Fenn .In the 2025 race, Sbonelo Khwela powered through tough rapids to finish second.
If Birkett and Fenn win in 2026, Fenn will become the first paddler to win the Dusi twice, aside from Birkett’s multiple titles. Birkett would also make history by claiming a record-breaking 16th Dusi victory.
