Kaaps dictionary marks language milestone
Story 2
A major step for language recognition in South Africa has been marked with the launch of a trilingual Kaaps, Afrikaans and English dictionary at the Castle of Good Hope.
The Kaaps Woriboek is one of the first formal efforts to document and standardise Kaaps, a widely spoken language rooted in Cape Town communities. It includes about 1 600 words collected through years of research and public input.
Experts say the dictionary will help preserve the language, improve access to education and expand its use in academic spaces, while strengthening recognition of Kaaps as a legitimate language spoken by millions.
Editor-in-chief Quintin Williams says he hopes it will help challenge stereotypes about Kaaps speakers
