Soweto school celebrates World Book Day with storytelling and creativity
Story 1
Learners at Elsie Ngidi Primary School in Chiawelo, Soweto, marked World Book and Copyright Day with a lively celebration focused on reading, storytelling and creativity.
The event, hosted by Nal’ibali in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education, featured storytelling sessions, poetry performances and dramatisations of traditional folktales.
Organisers say the celebration highlighted the importance of books in developing literacy skills and encouraging a love for reading among young learners, especially as many children still struggle to read for meaning by the age of ten.
The initiative also called for continued support to improve access to books and strengthen reading programmes in communities.

Several other South African wrestlers gained valuable experience against tough continental opposition, with a number of athletes finishing just outside the medals after competitive bouts.
The team will now turn its attention to the remaining women’s and freestyle events as they look to build on the early success.

World’s oldest Humboldt penguin marked on milestone at Cornwall sanctuary
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Paradise Park Wildlife Sanctuary in Cornwall in the United Kingdom has marked what is believed to be the 38th year since the birth of Spneb, recognised as the world’s oldest Humboldt penguin.
Keepers prepared a special ice cake topped with fish to mark the occasion, with sardines and sprats among her favourite treats.
Staff say Spneb remains active and inquisitive, and continues to interact with her colony despite her advanced age.
She recovered years ago from a serious fungal infection and has since lived an unusually long life for her species.
