UJ ranked Africa's top university for sustainability
The University of Johannesburg has been ranked the leading university in South Africa and Africa.This was issued in the 2026 Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Ratings. UJ placed 39th globally, is among the world's top 40 universities for sustainability.The university also ranked first in South Africa across eight United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including quality education, climate action and reducing inequality.The latest results follow UJ's recent rise into the global top 300 in the QS World University Rankings and a record performance in the U.S. News Best Global Universities Rankings.

Volunteers Rebuild Silvermine Lookout
A hiking group and volunteers in Cape Town have helped rebuild the Blackburn Ravine lookout deck in Silvermine after it was destroyed during recent fires. Members of the Walkie Talkies hiking group raised funds for the rebuild. Friends of Table Mountain, SANParks Honorary Rangers and other volunteers were all involved to restore the structure. The rebuilt lookout once again allows hikers to enjoy views over Hout Bay and the Peninsula.

Young Stars Shine in Lion King JR
The National Children's Theatre in Johannesburg is helping young people build confidence and life skills through its latest production of Disney's The Lion King JR. The show features 51 young performers, including children with disabilities, who have spent months preparing for the production. Beyond the stage, the programme gives participants an inclusive space to develop communication skills, make friends and discover their talents. Disney's The Lion King JR. runs from 3 to 19 July at the National Children's Theatre in Parktown.

New DNA Technology Helps Protect Rwanda’s Wildlife
Scientists are using environmental DNA (eDNA) to protect endangered wildlife in Rwanda without disturbing the animals. The method identifies species from tiny traces of genetic material, such as fur or droppings left in soil and water, reducing the need for close human contact during wildlife surveys. Introduced by the African Wildlife Foundation with the Rwandan government, the project aims to create a full record of Rwanda’s wildlife.The information will help conservationists protect biodiversity from threats such as climate change and habitat loss.
