A major milestone in African healthcare has been reached with the arrival of the first liver perfusion machine at the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Parktown. The advanced R2.7 million technology keeps donor livers functioning outside the body.This could improve the quality of donor organs and increase the number of successful liver transplants. Transplant surgeon Dr Sharan Rambarran said the machine may also reduce complications linked to traditional ice storage, helping patients recover more quickly after surgery.

Learners at Crawford International Sandton Pre-Primary rolled up their sleeves for Mandela Day, packing soup jars that will be donated to people in need. Teacher Bianca Fleishman said the experience went beyond creating donations, becoming an opportunity to teach children meaningful values from a young age. The initiative forms part of the school’s Mandela Day activities, encouraging learners to understand that even small acts of kindness can make a difference in the lives of others.

Liberty Group South Africa is continuing its mission to provide school shoes to disadvantaged children, helping more learners walk to school with comfort and dignity.As part of its Youth Month campaign, the company is raising awareness for millions of South African children who still attend school without proper footwear, particularly in rural communities. The initiative has already donated more than 100,000 pairs of school shoes. Four 1km walking routes were set up yesterday at Sandton City Mall. For every kilometre completed by participants, Liberty would donate one pair of school shoes to a child in need.
