South Africa has been ranked the fifth-best country in the world for retirement in the 2026 Retirement Abroad Index by The Expatriate Group.The ranking recognises the country's quality healthcare, affordable cost of living, welcoming communities, natural beauty and ease of settling in for retirees.The annual index compares countries using key retirement factors, including healthcare, visa accessibility, health insurance requirements, living costs and quality of life.
This is good news because it highlights South Africa as a world-class destination, recognising its quality of life, natural beauty and affordability while boosting the country's international reputation.

The University of Johannesburg has been ranked the leading university in South Africa and Africa.This was issued in the 2026 Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Ratings. UJ placed 39th globally, is among the world's top 40 universities for sustainability.The university ranked first in South Africa across eight UN Sustainable Development Goals. This includes quality education, climate action and reducing inequality.The latest results follow UJ's recent rise into the global top 300 in the QS World University Rankings.

Residents of Langa in the Western Cape are being encouraged to drop off unwanted electronic devices at collection points to promote recycling and reduce environmental harm.This forms part of wider efforts across South Africa to reduce electronic waste. Organisations, including the E-Waste Association of South Africa, are working with local partners to recover valuable materials such as metals and plastics, while giving usable electronics a second life.
