Volunteer Medical Team Brings Smiles to Mpumalanga Children
Story 2
A team of 40 volunteer medical professionals has been in Mbombela over the weekend to perform 25 free cleft lip and palate surgeries at Rob Ferreira Hospital.
Led by Operation Smile South Africa, the mission brought together doctors from Cape Town and Johannesburg to deliver life-changing care to children with cleft conditions.
These conditions can make it hard for children to eat, speak, or grow properly.
The programme also includes dental care as part of a holistic treatment plan.
Operation Smile says it’s working to make cleft care part of public health systems across South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.

UJ Joins Project to Tackle Vehicle Pollution in Johannesburg
Story 3
The University of Johannesburg’s Process, Energy & Environment Technology Station, or UJ PEETS, is part of a new initiative to measure vehicle emissions in Johannesburg, where cars produce over 75 percent of nitrogen oxide pollution.
While this figure is known, the project uses remote sensing technology to collect real-time data on emissions from different vehicles on the roads.
This detailed information will support the City’s clean air zone plans to reduce pollution and protect public health.
As part of a global effort across 14 cities, the project aims to promote cleaner urban transport.
Data collection started in July and will continue until next year, with results expected to help improve air quality in the region.
