Johannesburg’s Market Theatre
Story 2
Johannesburg’s Market Theatre has revived the musical Marabi as part of its 50th anniversary programme.
The production opened on 19 January 2026 and runs until 15 February, telling the story of a family of black migrants in 1930s Doornfontein and their experiences of city life.
Directed by Arthur Molepo and adapted from Modikwe Dikobe’s Marabi Dance, the musical uses marabi music to reflect the period’s social and cultural environment.
Through this revival, the theatre preserves South Africa’s musical heritage and shares the history of early urban communities with new audiences.
