Young Dainfern student hailed a hero after saving police officer

James Smith, a Grade 11 student at Dainfern College in Johannesburg, has been honoured after saving a police officer’s life in the Eastern Cape.
While on holiday in Kei Mouth, James spotted an unconscious officer floating face down in the water. Using his first aid training, he performed CPR, helped lifeguards, and ensured an AED was brought to the scene.
His calm, quick actions helped stabilise the officer, who later made a full recovery with no neurological damage.
James has been thanked by local police, invited to assist with lifeguard training, and awarded the Freedom of the Town honour.

The Department of Basic Education has started national teacher training workshops in Mpumalanga to support the rollout of the Online Teacher Development Platform.
The platform allows teachers to access training at their own pace, focus on content that meets their professional needs, and collaborate with colleagues.
It also aims to reduce administrative workloads by shifting from paper-based training to an online system.
The rollout integrates Continuing Professional Teacher Development activities and will be introduced nationwide.

Eco-activists work to transform Westbury into a community hub

A group of eco-activists in Westbury, Gauteng, is transforming a neglected passageway into a safe, green space for the community.
Led by Elroy Daniels, alongside Debbie Cockerell, Evelyn Van Niekerk, and Quanit Soeker, the team has cleared waste, planted trees and flowers, installed benches, and created areas for sport and outdoor activities.
Their efforts aim to give children safe places to play, provide opportunities for residents to volunteer and earn, and shift the focus in Westbury from crime to community pride.
A clean-up campaign will take place on 31 January, inviting residents and volunteers to join in and support the project.
