Gauteng provincial government announces resumption of Gautrain expansion project

The Gauteng provincial government says it will resume the process to expand the Gautrain rapid rail network.

The expansion will see the rail network extended to Soweto, Atteridgeville, Mamelodi, Fourways and parts of the Westrand.

The Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says the project will later be expanded to Sedibeng in the Vaal.

The initiative aims to extend the existing 80-kilometer system, adding up to 300 kilometers of rail lines, connecting underserved areas to key economic hubs, while integrating new routes to enhance connectivity and support sustainable development.

Lesufi delivered his State of the Province Address on Monday.

Warren Maroon wins 2026 Investec Emerging Artist Award

The 13th Investec Cape Town Art Fair has announced Warren Maroon as the recipient of the 2026 Investec Emerging Artist Award.
Maroon was recognised for his large scale wall piece Rising Sun, which was created from glass, matchsticks and balsa wood.

In addition to a cash prize, the award offers the recipient increased visibility among both domestic and international collectors, curators and galleries attending the fair.

The Award forms part of the Art Fair's mission to connect local industry and talent with collectors and curators in South Africa and internationally and was created to recognise early‑career South African artists who have not yet had a solo museum presentation or international solo exhibition.

Organisers have described the fair as the most ambitious edition to date, with 126 exhibitors from 34 international cities and work by more than 490 artists.

Vergelegen Wine Estate launches annual sunflower celebration

The Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West in the Western Cape has officially opened its annual sunflower season, with a large field now in full bloom.

Visitors can enjoy taking photos, buying fresh sunflowers and tasting sunflower-inspired treats.

A portion of the proceeds from the sunflower sales will help support the Patch Helderberg Child Abuse Centre in Cape Town.

The sunflower display is expected to continue until the end of this month, depending on the weather.

An innovation by African engineers is offering practical solutions to the continent’s mobility and energy challenges.

The Recharging Hope initiative is breaking new ground through a historic solar-powered motorcycle journey across Africa, showcasing the potential of homegrown renewable energy innovation.

The team which was led by researchers from the Electric Mobility Lab at the Stellenbosch University,

completed a 6,200-kilometre, multi-country expedition from Nairobi to Stellenbosch using an electric motorcycle powered entirely by solar energy.

The project set out to demonstrate that locally developed, solar-powered electric mobility is not only possible, but a viable and sustainable alternative to imported fossil fuels in addressing Africa’s transport and energy demands.

The journey has been documented in a series titled Recharging Hope, capturing both the technical challenges and groundbreaking achievements behind the cross-continental ride.
