Soweto learners celebrate World Book Day

Learners at Elsie Ngidi Primary School in Soweto marked World Book and Copyright Day on last Thursday through storytelling, poetry, singing and a dramatization of the traditional South African folktale-Tselane and Dimo.
The event, led by Nal'ibali with the Gauteng Department of Education, gave learners direct exposure to books and reading activities.
The programme promotes reading skills and access to literacy resources in a community where many children lack early reading support.

BIC hosts school roadshow, donates stationery

Multinational company, BIC, hosted a roadshow at Ponelopele Oracle Secondary School on 24 April 2026, donating stationery and launching a storytelling competition.
Learners wrote entries, watched a play on peer pressure and decision-making, and took part in quizzes, with prizes awarded.
The top 15 participants will receive learnerships through the Skills Development Corporation, linking school activities to training opportunities.

Free home-care training in Alexandra tackles unemployment

A free home-based care training programme in Alexandra is addressing youth unemployment while expanding support for vulnerable communities.
Gift of Day, in partnership with Sibongile Home Based Care, has launched the second phase this month.
More than 70 young people have enrolled in the eight-week certified course, which trains participants in home care, nursing and community support.
Organisers plan to increase intake to over 100 and prepare graduates for work in clinics, hospitals and care organisations.

A new mega bridge in Lesotho is set to double water exports to South Africa.
The 825-metre bridge, 90 metres high, forms part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.
It currently supplies 780 million cubic metres of water a year, with transfers expected to rise to more than 1.27 billion cubic metres once completed.
President Cyril Ramaphosa says the project shows what Africa can achieve through cooperation and infrastructure development:
