AI WhatsApp programme helps South African teachers detect early hearing loss
Story 1
A new AI powered WhatsApp training programme has been launched in South Africa to help teachers identify early signs of hearing loss in children.
Developed by the University of Pretoria in partnership with the hearX Foundation, the free programme uses a chatbot to guide educators through short training modules on recognising hearing difficulties and supporting early referrals.
More than 10 thousand teachers and parents enrolled within two weeks of launch, highlighting strong demand for accessible training. The initiative aims to improve early detection in classrooms, where many cases of hearing loss are first noticed, helping children receive support sooner.
