Learners Create Sign Language Dictionary
Story 1
Two learners at St Vincent School for the Deaf are developing a South African Sign Language dictionary to help their deaf peers study Life Orientation at home. They noticed that learners can struggle with unfamiliar terms when there is no one available to sign or explain them, and decided to create their own solution. The project grew from the school’s Coding for Inclusion club, which brings together about 60 learners who use iPads, coding applications and robotics kits to solve problems. Because coding is visual, learners can see how their instructions produce results on screen, helping them test ideas, identify problems and try again. The programme also builds skills such as teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving.
The story celebrates Deaf learners using technology and their own experiences to create solutions for their peers. It also shows how practical technology programmes can build confidence and skills while opening up new possibilities for learners’ futures.
