The funding supports the university’s Climate Risk Modelling Project, which uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve weather forecasting across Africa.
The project will focus on Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa, aiming to strengthen early warning systems, support climate-resilient farming, and empower communities with reliable climate data.
Wits is one of fifteen global teams chosen for the initiative, which promotes innovative AI solutions to tackle biodiversity loss, food insecurity, and climate change.

The Eastern Cape government has congratulated newly crowned Miss South Africa 2025, Qhawekazi Mazaleni, describing her as a beacon of hope and pride for the province.
Mazaleni, a 24-year-old speech therapist, author, and digital creator from Idutywa, was crowned during a glamorous ceremony at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria on Saturday.
She holds a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology with a focus on autism and is known for her advocacy for children with special learning needs.
Mazaleni has also authored a children’s book designed to support learners with cerebral palsy.
She becomes the second Miss South Africa from the Eastern Cape, following Zozibini Tunzi, who won the title in 2019.
