Each school received inverters, batteries, and solar panels funded through the Eskom Development Foundation.
The systems ensure uninterrupted teaching during electricity outages, reduce energy costs, and allow savings to be redirected to educational resources. Eskom plans to roll out the initiative nationally.

Gibela and TUT strengthen partnership for rail skills development

The Gibela Rail Transport Consortium has further strengthened its partnership with the Tshwane University of Technology to advance manufacturing and skills development.
The Gibela Research Chair, a key driver of innovation, skills development and localisation in South Africa’s rail manufacturing sector, has been granted a four-year extension, securing its continuation until 2030.
In the past five years, the Chair has supported 39 Master’s and 24 Doctoral candidates, contributing to a total of 51 graduates.
It also plays a critical role in skills development and community engagement.

This as the department has launched its first-ever Mother Tongue-Based Bilingual Education assessments for Grade 4 learners.
The programme aims to build stronger literacy and numeracy skills and create more equal learning opportunities.
Acting Director for Communication and Research, Terence Khala, says these assessments mark an important milestone in SA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen foundational learning, improve learner comprehension and build a more equitable and effective education system.
