California tribe restores ancestral lands and reintroduces Tule elk

The Tule River Indian Tribe in California has regained 17,000 acres of ancestral land in the Yowlumne Hills.
As part of the land’s return, several Tule elk were released into the hills for the first time in decades.
The land connects the tribe’s reservation with US Forest Service land and the Giant Sequoia National Monument, creating a significant conservation corridor.
The tribe partnered with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to reintroduce the elk.
The restored land will support wildlife preservation, cultural heritage, and environmental stewardship.
