Sesame Workshop promotes children speaking up
Story 2
Sesame Workshop International South Africa has emphasised the importance of helping children build the confidence to speak up from an early age.
This comes as South Africa observes Child Protection Week running from May 29 to June 5, 2026.
The organisation says children develop their voices through everyday interactions where adults listen, respect boundaries, and respond calmly when children express discomfort or say no.
It encourages caregivers to use simple actions such as asking before physical contact, stopping when a child refuses, and teaching children that they can talk to trusted adults when something feels wrong.
It says these daily habits help children feel safe, understand their rights, and are more likely to speak up when they need help.

Ravensmead youth restore community spaces

Young people in Ravensmead, Cape Town, are helping to restore their community by painting over gang graffiti, cleaning neglected spaces, and assisting elderly residents with home improvements.
The work forms part of the Dignify the Youth initiative, supported by Plascon and the HOOD Youth Development Project, which aims to give at-risk youth positive alternatives to crime and gangsterism.
The project has already helped repaint six homes and a community centre in Uitsig while encouraging young people to take pride in their neighbourhood.
