A team of specialists at UCT Private Academic Hospital in Cape Town has achieved a South African medical first by using cryoablation to treat recurring cancer.
The procedure, which freezes and destroys cancer cells with extreme cold, was applied to secondary tumours from papillary thyroid carcinoma. Guided by advanced imaging, doctors were able to target the tumours precisely without major surgery, offering a less invasive option with faster recovery and fewer complications.
This milestone opens the door to broader use of cryoablation in South Africa, giving patients access to innovative cancer care locally.
