The National Sea Rescue Institute and SCOUTS South Africa Western Cape Region have launched a programme teaching water safety and survival swimming while opening pathways into volunteering and lifeguarding.
Started at the Hawequas Scout Adventure Centre in Wellington, the initiative targets young people not in employment, education or training.
Participants gain skills to help their communities and can progress from swimming lessons to instructing and potentially joining NSRI as lifeguards or crew.
Over 335 Scout leaders joined the first phase, with 192 volunteers moving to the next stage of training.

Franschhoek to Host First Montreux Jazz Festival in Africa

South Africa is set to make music history as the iconic Montreux Jazz Festival comes to Franschhoek for the first time.
The three day event, taking place from 27 to 29 March, marks the festival’s first ever edition on African soil. Known globally for showcasing world class jazz and diverse musical talent, the festival will feature a mix of international stars and leading African artists across multiple stages.
Organisers say the event will also boost tourism and while celebrating cultural exchange through music.
Montreux Jazz Festival spokesperson Lara Stewart says this will create opportunities for local performers to have global exposure.
