Teen hero earns rare scouting honour after dramatic river rescue
Teaser / Tailpiece story
A teenage boy from Texas has been awarded one of the rarest honours in scouting after saving his leader from drowning during a rafting trip. Thirteen year old Devon Champenoy was navigating class three rapids in Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains when his scout leader became trapped underwater after falling from the raft.
With the raft still moving through rough water, Champenoy managed to steady himself and free the man’s foot, allowing others to assist in the rescue. Despite the danger, he then took control of the raft and guided the group through the remaining rapids to safety.
The bravery earned him the Honor Medal with Crossed Palms, awarded fewer than 300 times in more than a century.
