The Re.Bag.Re.Use initiative celebrated its fifth anniversary after reaching the milestone of nearly 200,000 upcycled bread bags on World Upcycling Day.
The project which was founded in 2021 supports 21 local households by turning empty plastic into everyday items such as tote bags, mats and hats.

The programme has helped to empower women who earn an income by cutting discarded plastic into strips and crocheting it into handcrafted products.

Founder Regine le Roux says the initiative has kept the equivalent of nearly ten baby elephants’ worth of plastic out of the environment.
