Grade 9 learner Adivhaho Mokakatleng from Marlboro Gardens Secondary School is featured in an international book about owls, inspiring children worldwide.
His passion for wildlife grew through the Owlproject.org initiative, which introduces young people to owl conservation.
Award-winning author Frances Backhouse included Adivhaho’s story in her book Owls, part of the Orca Wild series for middle-grade readers.
Adivhaho has been involved in caring for owls at school since Grade 6, feeding baby owls until they can hunt independently.
His teacher, Motlatsi Zulu, praised his dedication and highlighted the importance of passing on environmental care to future generations.

Young South Africans with a passion for the arts have a powerful new opportunity through the ACT Nyoloha Scholarship Programme.
The initiative offers two scholarships worth R300 000 each for aspiring visual and performing artists to study further.
The applications are open to youth aged 17 to 25.
Participants will join a three-month online mentorship with top creatives like photographer Dahlia Maubane and performer Grant Towers.
This year’s programme also includes training in AI and mixed-reality, preparing artists for careers in both the arts and the digital world.

Around 60 pilot whales were rescued after becoming stranded on a beach in Ólafsfjörður on Sunday.
Local residents and emergency teams quickly came together in freezing waters to guide the whales back into the open sea by early evening.
Experts believe the whales got trapped while chasing mackerel, which have migrated north due to warmer ocean temperatures.
The rescue drew the support of dozens of villagers, marking a powerful example of community and wildlife coming together.
Once known for whaling, Iceland has recently ended this practice, making the rescue even more symbolic of a changing relationship with marine life.
