Record Entries Boost Youth Music Contest

A record 28 young South African musicians have been selected to compete in the National Youth Music Competition in Stellenbosch from 1 to 6 December.
The competition, open to classical musicians aged 14 to 19, received 50 entries, the highest since it began in 1984.
Contestants will perform across four rounds for a share of R180,000 in prize money and the opportunity to perform in the final with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.
The finalists will be announced after the semi-final rounds during the week-long event.

eThekwini Bakery Initiative Creates Jobs

The eThekwini Municipality's Community Container Bakeries Programme has created 222 permanent jobs while helping township entrepreneurs build sustainable businesses.
Since launching in 2019, the programme has delivered more than 30 fully equipped container bakeries across Durban, providing equipment, training and business support to qualifying co-operatives.
During the 2025/26 financial year, six new bakeries opened, with three more planned for 2026/27.
One beneficiary, Bread Army Bakery in Zwelibomvu, has grown from a two-person home business to a bakery employing seven full-time staff.

AI Startups Invited to Apply

Google has opened applications for its 2026 Google for Startups Accelerator: South Africa, which will support 15 AI-focused startups.
Selected businesses will receive up to R1 million in equity-free funding, technical mentorship and access to Google's AI tools during the three-month programme.
The accelerator is open to South African-led startups owned or controlled by historically disadvantaged persons that are developing AI solutions for local needs.
Applications close on 28 August 2026.
