Ellis Park Tennis Courts get a new lease on life

The Joburg Tennis Grassroots Foundation is helping bring Johannesburg’s historic Ellis Park Tennis Courts back to life while giving young people access to free tennis coaching.
The more than 100 year old precinct now hosts coaching sessions for between 30 and 60 children three times a week.
The programme also provides local coaches from surrounding communities with training and work experience.
The foundation hopes to restore all 16 courts and develop Ellis Park into a thriving community sports hub.

12 year old Cape Town learner collects 100 Jars of Hope for families in need

A 12 year old Grade 7 learner from Somerset West has helped provide warm meals for families in need in Macassar, Cape Town, through a community donation drive.
As part of his school’s leadership programme, Jesse Thurman set out to fill 100 Jars of Hope with ingredients including rice, lentils, soup mix and stock.
With support from his school, family and local community, he collected about R2,500 worth of supplies and helped prepare all 100 jars.
The jars were then distributed to families in an informal settlement in Macassar.

Cape Town expands animal sterilisation drive

The City of Cape Town is investing R850,000 to sterilise 1,500 dogs and cats in vulnerable communities.
The latest phase of the Mass Animal Sterilisation Project will begin in September across Manenberg, Hanover Park, Athlone and Heideveld.
Since 2013, the initiative has sterilised more than 19,000 animals, helping improve pet health and prevent unplanned litters, while easing pressure on animal shelters.
