UP Brings STEM Experiences to Schools

The University of Pretoria’s Sci-Enza Science Centre is taking virtual reality and other STEM learning experiences to under-resourced schools in and around Pretoria.
During a recent visit to TransOranje School for the Deaf, learners used VR headsets to explore solar energy, hydroelectricity and underwater environments.
The programme aims to give learners access to practical science experiences and support classroom learning.
Sci-Enza is working with the Department of Basic Education’s Tshwane South District to reach more schools in the area.

Young Scientists Win Water Challenge

Young scientists and water professionals from South Africa, Lesotho and the Netherlands have won the 2026 Wetskills South Africa Water Challenge with a plan to tackle water losses.
The winning team, WaterWatch, includes participants from Sol Plaatje University, Rhodes University, Rand Water and uMngeni uThukela Water.
Their proposal brings communities, municipalities and other partners together to identify leaks, illegal connections and other causes of water loss.
Sol Plaatje University master’s student and WaterWatch team member Bingiwe Mabena says the programme can also improve accountability:

246 Runners Join Elephant Conservation Event

Two hundred and 46 runners and walkers took part in HERD’s fourth annual Trails for Trunks event in Pretoria earlier this month.
Participants completed trail distances ranging from two to 15 kilometres to raise support for HERD’s elephant rescue, rehabilitation and conservation work.
Supporters also joined the event virtually from other parts of the world, walking and running for the cause.

Skipnation Brings Rope-Skipping Across Provinces

Skipnation 2026 is bringing rope-skipping competitions to communities across seven South African provinces.
Twelve clubs are hosting events during August, with athletes competing in Basic Jump, Speed Run and Double Under disciplines.
The programme started in the Free State on 1 August, where 55 athletes from two clubs and 10 schools took part.
All participating clubs are using the same judging and scoring system, allowing results from different provinces to be compared.
