Wits Innovation Wins International Award for Air Quality Monitoring
Story 1
The University of the Witwatersrand has won a prestigious 2025 ODESS Prize in France for its AI-powered environmental monitoring system.
The project, led by Professor Bruce Mellado, adapts particle physics technology to track air pollution in real time.
The system, already deployed in parts of Gauteng, combines affordable sensors, IoT communications and artificial intelligence to detect pollution and related health risks as they occur. Experts say it allows communities and policymakers to respond quickly and make informed decisions.
Supported by local and international partners, the project demonstrates how South African innovation can apply advanced science to real-world challenges.
The award will be presented on 9 October at the ODESS International Conference in Lavaur, France.
