Next Chapter Jozi collects 2,500 books for under-resourced schools

The Next Chapter Jozi literacy initiative has collected 2,500 books to support under-resourced schools in the Johannesburg inner- city.
The project was founded by St John’s learner Jenovic Lumu, whose own schooling experience exposed him to the challenges faced by schools with limited access to functional resources and adequate learning materials.
Lumu and his co-learners created a platform to address gaps in educational resources, with a focus on functional libraries, literacy and introducing younger learners to STEM subjects.
The initiative has come full circle through its partnership with Berea Primary School, where the team runs reading and STEM sessions and plans to donate a large collection of quality, age-appropriate books.

Municipal team wins City’s inaugural Innovation Pitch Day

A team of Cape Town municipal workers took top honours at the City’s first Digital Innovation Pitch Day.
The Employees were given a platform to present their ideas for improving service delivery to a panel of judges and fellow City staff, at the City’s first Innovation Pitch Day, which was held at the Cape Town Civic Centre last week.
Seven finalists made it through to the showcase, out of 44 submissions, with proposals ranging from employment solutions to ways of preserving institutional knowledge.
The event was held in connection with the United Nations International Day of Science, Technology and Innovation, placing the focus on how technology and creative thinking can help address practical challenges.
The winning team, presented an idea for an AI-powered computer vision intelligence platform aimed at supporting the City’s artisans, technicians and inspectors.

R568 upgrade to boost mobility in Bronkhorstspruit

The Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, says the upgraded R568 Road in Bronkhorstspruit, in Tshwane, will help strengthen the link between communities and economic activity in the region.
The road serves as an important transport link between the N4 and the D670 intersections in Bronkhorstspruit, facilitating mobility over long distances.
The Project scope covered the rehabilitation and upgrading of over eight kilometres, the construction of surfaced shoulders, the upgrading of key intersections and the installation of road signs and markings.
Diale-Tlabela says the project is an investment in safer transport, improved connectivity and economic growth in the region.
