NSPCA wins Best Animal Welfare Advocacy award

The National Council of SPCAs has officially been named the Best Animal Welfare Advocacy winner at the 2026 African Excellence Awards.
Chief Executive Officer of the NSPCA, Esté Kotzé, highlighted the dedication behind the recognition and says the award reflects more than seventy years of steady work in protecting animals across South Africa.
She says as the demand for frontline enforcement grows, the NSPCA relies on public contributions to keep its inspectorate fleets ready and prepared.

Western Cape boosts Matric exam preparation

Matric learners in the Western Cape will receive additional academic support, as they prepare for the National Senior Certificate examinations.
The provincial Education Department says it will invest 44-million-rand in its Matric School Holiday Programme.
The Department says the funds will be divided across autumn, winter and spring schools.
Over 31 000 matric learners attended the #BackOnTrack winter school classes during the mid-year school holiday, which took place across 8 districts in the province.
The Western Cape’s Peter Johnson says a further 25-million-rand a year will go towards mathematics and science support

SA learners among top performers at SADC Essay Competition

3 South African learners have secured a place among the top performers at the 2026 SAD
Secondary School Essay Competition,
with KwaZulu-Natal learner Siyambonga Makhoba securing third place in the regional competition.
Makhoba, from KZN's Empangeni High School, received 750 US dollars and a certificate for his third-place finish and a further 500 US dollars
as one of South Africa’s regional finalists.
The competition brought together secondary school learners from across the 16 SADC member states, providing young people with the opportunity to showcase their writing and critical thinking skills.
The Department of Basic Education has congratulated Makhoba, as well as fellow South African finalists Magwayi and Alwande Madlala of Ndondakusuka Secondary School in KwaZulu-Natal, for their achievements.
