Italy leads EU with new AI law
          Story 3
Italy has become the first European Union country to approve a law regulating artificial intelligence.
The legislation focuses on accountability, traceability, and human oversight, making it illegal to spread AI-generated content, such as deepfakes, if it causes harm.
The law permits text and data mining only for non-copyrighted content or scientific research by authorised institutions and requires parental consent for AI use by children under 14.
Italy’s move sets a precedent ahead of the EU-wide AI Act, which is due to be implemented across the bloc in 2027.
