Community-driven food rescue effort shows global impact
Story 3
Pittsburgh-based 412 Food Rescue has built a global model for tackling food waste, using a DoorDash style app called Food Rescue Hero to divert donated food nearing expiry to communities in need.

By 2019, the initiative had mobilised 25 000 volunteers to rescue more than 11 million kilograms of food, preparing up to 600 meals a day for non-profits.

By the end of 2024, the network had expanded to multiple US states, preventing over 46 million kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions, the same as taking more than 4 000 cars off the road for a year.

In total, 412 Food Rescue and its partners have saved about 113 million kilograms of food and avoided over 204 million kilograms of emissions, proving how ordinary people working together can make a real difference.
