Two Lost Bach Organ Pieces Performed for First Time
Story 3
Two previously unknown organ works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Chaconne in D minor and Chaconne in G minor, have been played for the first time over 300 years after they were composed.
The pieces, believed to date from Bach’s early career as an organ tutor in Thuringia, were discovered in the 1990s by researcher Peter Wollny and recently confirmed as Bach’s compositions.
Dutch organist Ton Koopman performed them at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, where Bach served as cantor for 27 years.
Germany’s Culture Minister described the discovery as a major moment for the world of music, with Koopman praising the works for their high quality and versatility on both large and small organs.
