The Basic Education Department says testing learners in their home language alongside English helps improve understanding and confidence.
This as the department has launched its first-ever Mother Tongue-Based Bilingual Education assessments for Grade 4 learners.
The programme aims to build stronger literacy and numeracy skills and create more equal learning opportunities.
Nearly 12 000 schools are involved, showing strong national support for the initiative.
Acting Director for Communication and Research, Terence Khala, says these assessments mark an important milestone in SA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen foundational learning, improve learner comprehension and build a more equitable and effective education system.

3-South African schools have made the nation proud by winning top honours at the prestigious Inspired Builds Robotics Competition.
The competition is held annually among 111 schools from 24 countries.
Reddam House Bedfordview, Reddford House The Hills, and Reddam House Umhlanga took home top prizes, showcasing their innovative solutions to real-world problems.
In the 11-12 age group, Reddam House Bedfordview's Rhino Protector, a robot designed to deter poaching, inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goal on Life on Land won.
Reddford House The Hills' GCR3000, a garbage-collecting robot, took first place in the 12-13 age group, addressing land pollution concerns.
Reddam House Umhlanga's Sinead Samputh won a global title with Baymin, a low-cost health-assistant robot providing simple health checks, inspired by her community volunteering experience.
