Growing Whale Sightings Bring Hope for Ocean Conservation
Teaser / Tailpiece story
New research has found an increase in sightings of blue and fin whales off the west coasts of South Africa and Namibia, raising hopes for the recovery of the endangered species.
Scientists analysed more than 60 years of records and found that most sightings were recorded after 2012, more than four decades after commercial whaling ended.
Researchers say the whales are slowly returning to parts of their historic range, although populations remain low and protected status is still needed.
